(More customer reviews)I have been looking for a blender/food processor/blending system that could hold up to the ingredients I put in my smoothies, and this one works like a charm, even when my ingredients include big chunks of nectarines or walnut halves. All of my smoothies have come out smooth, not chunky, and this is even replacing my Cuisinart mini-prep as go-to kitchen appliance of choice.
Other things I love about this blender:
- There's a locking mechanism that allows you to set it to blend and walk away.
- With the multiple blending cups, I never have to worry about having a clean one handy. I wash the blades by hand, but put the cups and lids in the top rack of the dishwasher.
- A screw-on cap is included, so I can take my smoothies with me if I don't have time to drink it at home.
Finally, my smoothie recipe (which I now consume every morning):
- 1 peach or nectarine, in big chunks
- handful of fresh blueberries, if available (otherwise, frozen)
- handful of fresh raspberries
- 1/3 c. lowfat cottage cheese
- 1/3 c. plain lowfat yogurt
- 5-10 walnut halves

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Beater Blade to use with my Viking 7-Qt. mixer; my primary use of that machine is making artisan breads.
I love my Viking mixer for bread making, but occasionally use it to make cookies which contain a high proportion of oatmeal. Thus, the dry ingredients are prone to gathering along the sides and bottom of the mixing bowl and require that I stop the mixer, lift the head and move the ingredients using a spatula. While that isn't exactly a Herculean task, it is annoying. However, due to a stubborn streak and a less than industrious attitude on the particular day, I tried scraping the side of the bowl while the mixer was down and moving - even though I know better. The result was a broken spatula - just as one would expect.
When I saw this Beater Blade, I thought it might solve the problem. Once you have adjusted the Beater Blade, it does an excellent job of clearing the sides and bottom of the bowl. If you mix a lot of cookie dough or batter-type foods, then this item is well worth the money you will spend for it. The Beater Blade doesn't generate heat like the metal beaters, and, as a result, shortenings do not melt during creaming. The final product is much less "soupy" than when making cookie doughs using a metal beater. However, if you use your mixer primarily for breads, as I do, then the the Beater Blade is probably something you can live without.
I rated this item four stars because its utility is questionable in relation to the cost. Further, I have some concern about the longevity of the blade itself and whether it will wear quickly or whether it will become brittle if washed in the dishwasher.

Viking Professional Blender Review

(More customer reviews)I don't own a food processor and the couple I've had over the years did nothing to make cooking simpler. So, when I needed to replace my blender, I simply wanted something that was better than what I had before. (Cuisinart). I researched the subject and found this blender to be the most highly reccomended. I wasn't happy about having to pay so much, but the price, while significant, is not out of line. I was surprised to find that though there are all kinds of blenders to be had, they are almost all of about the same quality. Even the better ones have trouble crushing ice and if used regularly, can not last more than two years.
This is why I am willing to pay what looks like too much. This blender is a high quality appliance that does what it claims it will, lasts several years, and saves money in the end. I didn't buy it to make drinks. Yes, I discovered that nothing handles ice like this, but it does so much more that most blenders would choke on. I bought it primarily for dog food. I grind broccoli down to nothing. It's what killed my last blender. This just goes right through it. The trick, I learned, is to feed it small amounts at a time.
Like so much else, when you pay that much more, you end up with some strange thing with few "features". The face of this appliance has a dial and that dial has four positions; one of which is "off". There is a high speed, a low speed, and "pulse". That is all. That is all it needs. I have never seen anything like this. It chops quickly and grinds uniformly. I wouldn't try it, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it could grind rocks.
If you don't mind forking over a bit more, well, you get what you pay for. This is in a class all it's own. Seriously: there are blenders, and then there is this. It has a strong motor that does not complain at tasks that slow most blenders. It handles ice cubles like they are butter. I expect that I won't be buying a new blender again for many years, if ever. I had serious reservations regarding paying so much for a device I have never had a good experience with. I am so glad I took the risk. I suspect I will still have no regrets about this purchase a decade from now. Most blenders can't go ten months!

The consistency of the drinks that this machine makes is like a frozen coke consistency and the machine works very quickly and easily. The machine is also very easy to clean after use. I am able to get three full batches of drinks from one batch of ice from my refrigerator's automatic ice maker. The automatic feature shaves ice and blends perfectly. This is the third "smoothie" type machine that I have had and the only one that works like it is supposed to. The battery charges well and so far I have made 15 batches of drinks without a recharge.
This will definitely be nice on hot summer nights on the deck!

(More customer reviews)After owning two inferior blenders, I wanted one for our family that was powerful, sturdy, relatively quiet, easy to clean and good-looking. This blender is simply the best blender we have ever owned.
First, it is very powerful. You should have no problem using it for everything blenders are usually used for, including crushing ice, which it does amazingly well. It has a separate smoothie button that is fantastic: it varies the speed during the blending process and helps you create perfect smoothies, with no effort on your part. The blender shuts off automatically after using the smoothie or other preset functions, and has a digital display that counts down and tells you how long it will take to finish blending.
Perhaps most importantly, the curved blades and concave container are designed in such a way as to reduce or eliminate the amount of food that gets stuck in the bottom of the blender. In fact, after using it a few times, I was pleasantly surprised to find NO unblended pieces of food at the bottom of the blender. Everything was blended.
Regarding noise, this is by far the quietest blender I have ever encountered. With such a powerful motor, I'm not sure how they did it. I am a professional composer and have very sensitive ears, and the relative low volume of this blender is something I definitely appreciate. Don't get me wrong: it's a blender, so it still makes noise, but it is definitely NOT as loud as inferior blenders priced less than $100.
The base and container are quite heavy and will stay put when you are blending. It giggles a little when blending on a high setting (there are sturdy rubber feet that help to reduce noise), but it won't move on your counter. The container is made of thick glass, and you can wash the whole base in the dishwasher (the glass part in the bottom rack, the other parts in the top rack). The container lid has a sturdy ring that makes it very easy to pull off the tight-fitting lid. Don't let the pics fool you: that little ring is thicker than it looks.
Some blenders have plastic containers and some have glass, like this one. The advantage of plastic is really just the (usually) cheaper cost and lighter weight. The disadvantage is that plastic containers may crack (as ours did) and leak plastic molecules into your food over time as the container ages. Most plastics are carcinogenic, so I like to avoid plastic containers if at all possible, since this one is glass, and very thick, it is relatively safe. The markings on the side of the container are easy to read, so it's not difficult to use it as a measuring container when adding food, particularly liquids.
The blade housing is also very sturdy and much larger than on a typical cheap blender. It fits on so tightly that you need a turning handle (supplied) to unscrew the base. If I had only ONE complaint, this would be it. I don't like the idea of having to use anything other than my hands to disassemble the blender. But since I'll take a tight-fitting assembly over one that might leak any day, this really isn't a complaint at all.
BTW: for the technically inclined, this blender is assembled with screws, so if you wanted to disassemble the base, you could do it very easily. This thing is solid as a rock.
Regarding cleaning, the buttons are slightly raised under a one-piece pad that is extremely easy to clean. If any food does spill, which is unlikely, all you need to do is wipe it up with a soft rag or paper towel. One side note: you will need to thoroughly wash the blender once you get it out of the box. It still has the factory manufacturing smell, but that clears up with a good wash or two in the dishwasher.
Lastly, this is a fine-looking appliance. It's much sleeker than others made my KitchenAid and so on, and is industrial-quality, without looking like it belongs in a restaurant kitchen.
All in all, I am extremely happy with this blender and enthusiastically give it five stars.
***UPDATE***
We had this blender for 2 1/ 2 years, using it maybe 3-4 times a week on average, and the motor finally gave out. To be more accurate, the power light blinked on, but the blade assembly would not run. We didn't do anything abnormal with it, and mostly used it for smoothies. Then one day, it just would not work.
Like others mention here, it will leak if you do not screw the bottom part on very tight. In fact, you have to be quite strong to screw it on tight enough so that it will not leak. Ironically, leaks rarely happened over the button area, but definitely happened above the blade if the bottom was even a tiny bit loose. I also found it annoying that the only way to remove the base if it was screw on as tightly as it needed to be was to use the lever that comes with the blender. Shouldn't blenders come apart without having a separate gadget to worry about?
As for my comments that it can be taken apart, I'll have to retract that. I attempted to take it apart to replace a fuse, the part of the blender that apparently gave out, but it's basically impossible--not very easy to take apart at all.
All in all, we really enjoyed our Breville blender while it worked, but we think that for this price, it should last five years or longer under normal use. We will not purchase this model again and will look at other brands like Vitamix.

We make daily smoothies with crushed ice (crushed from our ice maker) and frozen fruit (bananas, strawberries, etc.) and milk or juice. We have always noticed a slight electrical smell from the unit whenever we were mixing our drinks. The quality of the blend was generally OK; occasionally it was unable to break up some of the ice chunks.
A plastic part on the base of the unit ended up shattering. This is a cheap plastic piece that turns the blade. I e-mailed Cuisinart's customer service group. It was a couple of weeks before they returned my e-mail. I had also left messages with their customer service number. After a few attempts I was finally able to speak with someone. I was told that I would have to send the blender back to them, at my cost, and include a ten-dollar check for them to repair the unit. After I told them that their policy was against the law in the State of California they agreed to issue a pickup tag with UPS and waived the ten-dollar fee.
I finally received a new blender back about a month and a half later. I will never purchase another Cuisinart product. We have since replaced the blender with a Kitchen Aid KSB5. So far this blender is incredible. It makes easy work of blending ice. I cannot recommend the Cuisinart because of its lack of reliability and Cuisinart's non-existent customer service.

This review was first placed in 2001. It is now April 2009 and the Kitchen Aid KSB5 is still running strong!

Weston Meat Grinders Review

(More customer reviews)Upon receiving the package, the front ring nut wasn't machined properly and it even had a hole in the side; looks like a poor cast job. I called customer service and got a replacement. It also seems to fit better too.
Okay, now onto using it. It grinds stuff fairly well, and there won't be any complaints here. However, after using it, I washed it, dried all of the components, reassembled it and put it back in the box for storage.
The next time I used it, I noticed rust along all of the non-tinned parts. This includes the crank handle, the knife, the plate, the clamp screw, the thumbscrew. They should have made this from stainless steel instead of tin plating.
No big deal, I just re-washed it and coated it with vegetable oil. Now, after having used it a few times, the tin plating has chipped off the plates, the auger and grinder body where they meet when spinning; along the shaft as well as at the ends.
I think it's too late to return this now, and probably too much hassle. I would not recommend that anyone purchase this item. It looks like cheap overseas manufacturing with no quality control.

Braun MR430HC Multiquick Deluxe Hand Blender & Chopper Review

(More customer reviews)Here's an instance of bad luck turned good; we moved and of course, the box of kitchen stuff failed to turn up and my older model Braun hand blender was gone. I had to purchase a new one, so I got another Braun because I loved my old one.
Well, this is certainly an improved model over the one I bought 10 years ago. IMMENSELY improved, and I love it so much I am, well, looking for things to beat up. Like pureed vegetable soups, frozen yogurt mix for the freezer, you name it.
Here's what has been made so much better:
1. The attachments that used to come with the Braun were run by the actual cutting blade. With this model, you can remove the blade portion of the stalk and screw the motor shaft onto the mini-chopper or whisk. I just love that!! The older chopper was hard to use because you had to hold it carefully in the socket designed for the blade to run the shaft. That's not a problem here --now the shaft of the blades are directly connected to the motor. A huge improvement.
2. The removable stalk means you can thoroughly clean the blade portion without worrying about submersing the motor part (a no-no for any electrical appliance.)
3. Because the motor is able to be detached from the blades, it is now more powerful--before, the motor seemed "dumbed down" to be able to run the mini-chopper. This new model motor kicks serious batter. In fact, it is so strong, make SURE YOU HAVE IT SUBMERGED in the puree before you run it or you will be spewing gazpacho all over your white kitchen. (I made gazpacho. I have a white kitchen. I know whereof I speak.)
4. The price, for this gem, is incredible. You get a whisk, a mini-chopper, the blender and a mixing beaker and a hanger for the wall if you want to mount it.
5. The one bad point: the motor is VERY strong, so if you have muscular weakness, carpal tunnel syndrome, or some kind of disability that challenges your hand control, I would recommend the variable speed model which goes from slow to fast. It is more money, but if you are physically challenged, it will prevent you from splashing hot soup as you puree it in the pot.
Otherwise, I can't recommend this enough. It is the most-used item I have in my kitchen.

It is simply ingenuous! Now I have my chopper always at reach and not taking any space on my counter. I can put both plastic cups and blades in the dishwasher to clean it and wipe the base with a paper towel.

(More customer reviews)I cannot believe that such a reputable place would keep these grills on their sites. I recieved this grill for Christmas and was so excited because I had seen it on TV and it looked perfect for my husband and I.
I used it a few times and it grilled perfectly. However, after about 3 times when I plugged it in nothing happened. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was. I went to the computer to see if anyone else had this problem and lo and behold their were hundreds of customers with similar problems. It seems to me that if a company had recieved numerous complaints about a product they sold (The Big Boss Grill) they would look into what was causing the problems and either fix it or take it off the market. I would have sent it back and I still might, but the shipping charges cost almost as much as the grill. Since most people don't send it back precisely for that reason the company makes out. Amazon I have done a lot of business with you in the past and I have been extremely satisfied with everything I purchased. I know people sell things through your site and if something isn't right it is up to the company that is selling it. However, if I were you after reading all the negative comments about the big boss grill I would not accept the site that was selling that product. It is your name that makes people think everything you sell on your site will be A-Okey.

(More customer reviews)I received this as a Christmas gift --one of the best I've ever enjoyed! It is easier, faster and less hassle than my food processor. The first day I got it I used it to slice potatoes for scalloped potatoes and oh my gosh how easy. I find I grab it and go to much more than my electric gadgets (and I admit, I love gadgets...) It's a necessity for what I need lots of--onions (is there a good recipe that does not include onions???) peppers, tomatoes, apples, fennel, etc....it's a wonder on hard fruits and veggies. The clean up is quick, the hand-guard/pusher is easy and actually works, (I've even used this thing with celery!) and the attachments fit and store very well in the rack that's included. (And very safely)
My only complaint is that the plastic seems to stain with carrot or tomato. In the big scheme of things....no biggie.
I love this thing!

An inexpensive alternative to a professional stainless-steel mandoline, the Swissmar Borner V-Slicer Pro makes it possible to quickly, uniformly, and safely slice and julienne vegetables and fruits. (More customer reviews)I purchased this blender, as many others have, based on the recommendation from Cook's Illustrated as a "Best Buy." I previously owned a Cuisinart blender that cost roughly three times as much as this one. I was never happy with the Cuisinart; it couldn't thoroughly crush ice or make smoothies, required constant intervening when blending to try to get the contents consistent, and eventually the motor burned out.
I have owned the Kalorik for over a year now, and have used it to make many smoothies and margaritas as well as the occasional pesto, sauce, or soup. To date, I have been extremely happy with the blender. I rarely, if ever, need to push the contents around to ensure everything gets blended. It is certainly not whisper-quiet, but is probably a little quieter than blenders with comparable power. It mows through an entire container of ice and frozen strawberries without slowing down or struggling at all. It's easy to clean since everything comes apart.
There are a couple of minor downsides that cause me to deduct one star from the rating (if I could rate it 4.5, I would). The lid is flimsy and can be difficult to remove. I did notice that they sell a pour top on the Kalorik website, so I may pursue one of those. I would also prefer at least one additional speed. The slowest setting is still awfully fast, so that one slower speed would be useful when starting a smoothie.
Those minor issues don't detract a lot from the blender in my mind. The best part about this blender is the value it offers. It is a high-performing product at a much lower price than most comparable units. I personally wasn't willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a blender, and am very happy with the price I paid for such a functional machine.

(More customer reviews)I ordered a back-up bowl for my mixer for "just in case" or those times I was doing lots of baking and didn't want to wash the bowl every time I needed to prepare something different. I could simply change bowls. Although this product arrived in a very timely manner and was marked as being for Kitcheaid 5-quart tip mixer, the company has apparently changed the size of the base where it screws in. This one was about 1/4" smaller in diameter than my original, so this was unusable for me and it had to be returned.

If you're making a recipe that calls for separate mixing in two bowls, you'll find that having a spare makes life oh so much easier. Definitely worth the investment!
